The South West Dance Network is now entering its second term of activity, a response to a shared need for stronger connection, support and visibility within the dance sector across the South West. The network was formed to create a space where artists, facilitators, producers and organisations can come together to share opportunities, support one another and strengthen the dance ecosystem in the region.
At the very first meeting, there was a strong and heartfelt reflection on incredible companies such as Dance in Devon & Far Flung. The legacy of that organisation continues to be celebrated across the dance community; there influence helped shape experiences and relationships across Devon and beyond. Hearing this repeatedly highlighted just how much shared history and shared care for the sector already exists here and how valuable it is to build on that.
What the Network Aims to Do
The South West Dance Network exists to:
- Create a supportive space where dance professionals and practitioners can connect
- Circulate opportunities, including funding bids, job vacancies and shared projects
- Promote dance activity such as workshops, classes and community provisions
- Strengthen visibility and connection between artists, schools, organisations and audiences across the South West
The network is still in its early stages and is discovering its identity collaboratively, shaped by everyone who participates.
How the Network Operates
The South West Dance Network brings together a growing group of members, currently over 40 and increasing; including freelancers, producers, teachers, lecturers, directors and artists working across a wide range of dance styles and practices.
Meetings take place online on the first Friday of each month via Zoom, creating a regular forum for connection, discussion and information-sharing. Meeting notes are shared after each session so that anyone unable to attend can stay up to date and connected.
There are also plans to introduce in-person gatherings in the future to strengthen local connection and collaboration further.
Early Impact and Ongoing Growth
Even in its early stages, the network has already begun to:
- Share job opportunities and open calls
- Highlight points of connection for artists and organisations
- Circulate information about activities and provision happening across the South West
Who the Network Welcomes
The South West Dance Network is open to anyone involved in the dance sector, including but not limited to:
- Dance teachers
- Choreographers
- Producers
- Emerging and established artists
- Dance facilitators, educators and directors
