Today was truly brilliant. We gathered 44 excited young people from Torbay and set off to the Theatre Royal Plymouth to see Hamilton.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth thanks to the lovely teams at TRP, Eduhams team, who made us feel so welcome. Sitting in Row C of the stalls was something else. The seats were incredible. We could see every expression, every detail of the actors. But, we do wonder…….why should such an experience only be available to those who can afford £60, £70 or even £250+ tickets? It just shouldn’t be the case.
Thanks to this incredible education event organised between Eduhams and Theatre Royal Plymouth tickets were set at the remarkable price of £10 per ticket. These rates made todays trip, not just memorable, but it was affordable and achievable for our group.
Following the show, the Q&A session gave yp fascinating insights into the behind-the-scenes world of theatre: from the coordination of the stage manager, to the orchestra’s collaboration and even the costs and craftsmanship behind wigs and costumes. It was especially moving to learn that one of the cast members is from the South West!
We are so thankful that this opportunity was provided and may just spark inspiration in young people to become the next director, choreographer, musical director, costume designer or technician.
At Doorstep Arts, we’re committed to creating many more theatre moments like this for the young people we work with. So here’s to the next Theatre Buddies adventure and to working toward making live theatre a reality for everyone, regardless of cost.
Thank you to everyone who made today possible, it was really special.
