On Monday 17 February, Dream Arts joined us at Stage Left, Palace Theatre for an evening of joy, laughter and thought-provoking performances of work-in-progress.
Dream Arts Rep Company is a young theatre company of refugee artists creating original productions fusing theatre, film, beatbox, and rap. They shared an excerpt of a brand new show ‘Heads Up: Frank’s Story…’, an adventure story about two brothers navigation their life on The Island.
Doorstep Youth Theatre performed individual and ensemble pieces that they’ve been developing through the Spring term working. These were original pieces of work based off of this term’s theme of ‘Baggage’. There were hilarious slow-mo handbags fights, spontaneous musical numbers and an array of colourful characters.
We were also joined by 3 members of DAS Musical Theatre – Teagan, Lilia and Amelia!
When reflecting on the evening, Teagan said:
“So I came up with the narrative for our piece about Bob Ross’s bag turning into a shark and their adventures.
We had about 1 hour of rehearsal time, which came together quite well, actually, and it was really nice to see it all come to life, especially with all the mad costumes for the shark and Bob Ross 😂
I think what worked well was how dry Lilia and Amelia were with the lines after I had said them, which really made the audience laugh.
The biggest challenge for me was trying not to laugh while I was narrating, which I struggled with as there were so many funny things like Lilia haunting Amelia as the shark or Barney as the French waiter.
I really enjoyed being a part of this event as there were so many funny things that dream arts in there performance like the drama class and just getting to meet them all as they are all so talented. I also loved working with DYT as they are all such lovely and talented people, and I enjoyed spending my time with them before and after the event.”
