Rooftoppers: Early Development

DYT Rep Company are working on a new original production. This term, they’re starting the journey of devising an original adaptation, inspired by Katherine Rundell’s classic book The Rooftoppers.

We’re delighted to be joined this term by visiting Lead Artist Mich Sanderson, who is working alongside Erin in sessions to direct the project. The company have been working hard since Sept to take inspiration from the book and to develop their own ideas, inspired by the storyline.

Just as we did with their last performance (Hushabye), DYT Rep Company are working with live music in the space in rehearsal – the in-house band have been creating original songs, scoring tracks and live accompaniment for scenes as they are being created/devised.

This music-infused process is really exciting as a way of working. We’re also exploring choreographic choices, scenic design elements and beginning to play with movement sequences which might form part of the scratch sharing at the end of November.

We’re exploring character creation, key themes we want to focus on, and thinking about how we might capture the skylines of Paris, evoking an entire cityscape in Stage Left.

We can’t wait to share this work-in-progress on 30 November at 8.15pm. Please do join us if you’re able – we’d love to have a feedback audience there for the scratch sharing to help us figure out what’s working and what else we might want to develop further.
