The Spanish Barn

Built over 800 years ago, Torre Abbey’s atmospheric tithe barn was originally used to store taxes paid to the abbey in the form of grain, hay and other farm produce. The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it played an important role housing 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The prisoners were taken from the only galleon captured during the conflict – the Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

One of the captured crew was a disguised woman who had been smuggled aboard to be with her husband. Over the years there have been multiple sightings of her ghost – The Spanish Lady – drifting around the barn in search of a loved one.
