Little Doorstep put on an amazing original performance following a group of fairies, mermaids, angels and dogs that came together to save their friend princess Elsa from her entrapment. Most of these scenes were devised by the young people and their imaginations with very little input from either me or Natasha. This made the piece particularly special because I felt the group performed to the best of each of their ability because of they felt a sense of ownership and pride over the narrative they had created.

I was so impressed by this group’s range of performance skills how much they are developing and strengthening these abilities. From singing ‘I Just Can’t Wait to be King’ to open the show to beautifully acting and storytelling through their characters this group absolutely smashed their performance!!

Furthermore, during the piece some of the older members of the group would lead the rest of the team into the next moment or scene of the story – making sure everyone knew what to do and where to go next. This leadership and focus was so great to see in the older members of the group as it shows a feeling of ownership and honour over the performance they created. Additionally, it showed teamwork and including the whole group by leading them through the piece to make sure each person felt a part of the story they had created together.

At Doorstep we believe that giving young people to chance to create their own artwork and stories is so important as it allows them to express themselves creatively and builds confidence. By creating and performing these stories it requires young people to use a range of skills and can allow them to step into multiple roles beyond just acting but also directing, composing, producing ect . . .
