Doorstep Seniors had the fantastic opportunity to venture on another Theatre Buddies trip to watch the vibrant and heartwarming musical ‘& Juliet’ at Theatre Royal Plymouth.
& Juliet is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic, asking the question: What if Juliet didn’t die at the end of the famous play? With hit songs, upbeat choreography, and a fresh perspective on gender and relationships, it was a perfect match for our group and the theme we are exploring in sessions this term ‘Change & Growth’.
This trip was part of our ongoing Theatre Buddies program, which aims to give young people the chance to experience theatre in all its forms, across a variety of venues. It’s essential that they see not only classic productions but also innovative shows that speak to the current generation—and & Juliet did just that.
The success of this unforgettable night wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from Theatre Royal Plymouth. A special thank you goes to Sara Rhodes and Annette Earl, whose understanding and generosity ensured our young people had the best possible experience.
Here’s what some of the young attendees had to say about the performance:
“It’s awesome—you know all the songs, which is fun!”
“The ensemble sections were really effective.”
“I Kissed a Girl was my favourite song!”
“Loved that Dr. Raaj is in the show—he did a great French accent.”
“The switch in stories was so clever.”
“It was great seeing topics like gender and relationships in the show.”
“So many plot twists!”
To top off the evening, a few of the young people managed to meet the cast, who kindly had their photos taken with the group.
We’re already looking forward to the next Theatre Buddies trip!
