Doorstep Arts are proud to share that we’ll be hosting LGBTQ+ Takeover in partnership with Paignton Library. A day-long celebratory and educational event on LGBTQ+ culture and community.
You can expect storytimes, arts and crafts, market stalls, workshops and to round it all off, an open mic! This is going to be a beautiful family event. You don’t want to miss it.

Morning Session
Time: 10 – 11.30am
Age: Most suitable for 4 – 9
Join us for a fun-filled morning of storytimes and arts & crafts for the family!
Are you fed up with the same old stories? Do you want to celebrate difference?
We do too! We’ll be reading a selection of stories which champion acceptance, inclusion and celebration of difference. Join Doorstep Arts’ dungaree lovers Amy and Sonia and enter a shared world as we venture through different stories.
There will also be an array of arts and crafts activities to take part in, including: #DragUpYourDungarees bookmarks, Unicorn dress up, DIY Pride Jars, and more…
Back by popular demand is our wig-making workshop from our Drag Queen Storytime event back in March. Here you will get to decorate fabulous paper wigs at our various stations. Your little one will then get the chance to #BringItToTheRunway and strut their stuff and get some snaps.

How to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ young people: a co-creation workshop
Time: 12 – 12.45pm
Age: 13 – 18
Maya (pictured below), co-founder of Proud2Be will host an interactive and fun workshop where there will be activities, group games and lots of time to chat and ask questions.
About Proud2Be:
Proud2Be is a grassroots user-led social enterprise that supports all LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual, non-binary + more) people in Devon and beyond, to lead empowered, fulfilled, and authentic lives.
Inspired by the mental health issues they faced as a result of the bullying, isolation, and discrimination they experienced growing up as LGBTQ+ in a rural village, twins Max and Maya Price set up Proud2Be in 2011 by launching the Proud2Be campaign which now features videos and photos from various public figures and members of the public.
In a short time, Proud2Be has established itself as a well-respected social enterprise, facilitating various groups and events for adults and families and a youth project, which includes online and in-person weekly youth groups in Totnes and Newton Abbot, 121 youth support, and a family coffee morning in Newton Abbot. In September, Proud2Be is launching a weekly LGBTQ+ youth group in Torquay.
Proud2Be delivers interactive workshops to young people and awareness training to organisations and schools around the UK.

Pride Graphic Design Workshop
Time: 12.45 – 1.15pm
Age: Most suitable for 10+
Doorstep Arts’ Amy Mellows (she/her) presents a workshop on using Canva.com to easily create graphics and digital designs that celebrate identity, empowerment, gender and sexuality and activism. Participants will learn transferable digital design skills and can have a go at creating their own colourful, powerful and rebellious pride designs. No prior digital design experience necessary, but all skill sets welcome!

Proud: Stories, Poetry and art on the theme of Pride
& Heartstopper Workshop
Time: 1.25 – 2.25pm
Age: Most suitable for 10+
Doorstep Arts’ Amy Mellows (she/her) presents some short readings from ‘Proud: Stories, Poetry and art on the theme of Pride’ (Compiled by Juno Dawson) and Netflix’s young adult LGBTQIA+ ‘Heartstopper’ (adapted from the ongoing graphic novel and webcomic series written and illustrated by British author Alice Oseman.)
This workshop will explore what it means to be part of/ be an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community in 21st Century Britain and the representation of LGBTQIA+ young people in arts, media and culture.
The readings will be followed by a reflection/Q&A on Amy coming out as Pansexual in her early 20’s and working in the creative industries as a queer artist and facilitator, with the opportunity for participants to create their own LGBTQ+ inspired short stories, poetry and spoken word during the session.

Open Mic
Time: 2.30 – 3pm
Age: Any
We will then round off the day with an Open mic, 2:30pm-3pm, where people will get the chance to share with an open and supportive audience. This is welcome to people of all abilities, the only requirement is that you are respectful and mindful that there may be little ones in the crowd!
