Doorstep’s Foot in the Door programme provides stepping stones for young people who are interested in working professionally in the arts and would like a chance to get their foot in the door of the industry.
Foot in the Door includes three possible routes, with each progressing onto the next:
Work Experience
Work Experience is a one week taster experience for young people who are interested in working professionally in the arts and would like a chance to get their foot in the door with the industry. Students can elect to take part formally through their school work experience scheme, or just volunteer directly through Doorstep Arts for the week.
Internships
Internships are a longer term voluntary commitment for young people looking for sustained involvement and more in-depth experience of working with the Doorstep team. As with Work Experience, internships can be arranged through your school or college, or by getting in touch with us directly. As with all roles at Doorstep, we do our best to design internships around each person’s strengths and interests. Apprenticeships are usually for young people aged 15-16 who have completed previous volunteering for Doorstep.
Assistants
These entry-level paid roles may involve facilitating drama sessions with younger students, supporting full productions in a technical or production role, or assistant-producing a Doorstep Theatre platform events. Assistants are paid positions, usually for older young people (aged 16+) who want to work professionally in the arts.
Once a young person has worked as an assistant for Doorstep, we can provide further Foot in the Door mentorship, training and support for you to move to Associate Artist status, and if appropriate, eventually to Lead Artist.
If you are interested in our Foot in the Door opportunities, you can contact us directly at any time through the year.
